From the ClassRoom to the street!!

We recently added some new artwork to the alley running behind the Mattress Factory! As we put things up we found an image someone else had put up- seen in the window below....

Our signs ranged from humorous to sad to downright mysterious.

Sandwhich Board Sign Time!!!

Day 4: Making sandwhich boards!!!

Thursday, July 17, 2008

Out of Class: Keep it rolling

What goes in the sketch books?

#1 put out your message in a bottle out and write a paragraph about it

#2 two studies of fonts: from memory or life, notice two fonts and try to replicate them in your
sketch book

You can look at the Pittsburgh Signs project for help!!

#3 three ideas for a sandwhich board: come up with three ideas and do a few doodles about what
your sandwhich board might look like.

I'll be checking sketchbooks on Tuesday of next week!

OUT OF CLASS

Check out the Wooster Collective!

They're doing stuff that's similar to our own work!

What's Your Sign?

Signs of the time

Day two: Talked about the art of sign-making and what signs do. Signs inform, warn, celebrate, and advertise to name a few things. We began our second project which entailed making 3 signs with some pretty curious motives:

* Advertise an imaginary service

*Inform or Proclaim something

* Make a Sign for something unusual that's missing

We set up a few of our signs outside of the Mattress Factory afterwards.

Welcome to Portable Works!!!

Welcome to the Portable Works class blog! This blog will reflect the work and investigations of a class taking place form July 15-Aug 1st of 2008 at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA! This class will explore mobility in our culture and making artwork in the larger context of a city ad opposed to simply considering a gallery space as the final destination for an artwork.
